On
Sunday, February 1, 2015, FWC staff from the Tequesta field station notified
HBOI MMRC stranding team of a live stranded whale in Stuart. HBOI staff quickly responded and was joined
by FWC Tequesta staff, FWC Law Enforcement officers, Martin County Sheriff,
Martin County Fire Rescue, Martin County Lifeguards, HBOI volunteers and other
volunteers. Despite the care and efforts
to save the animal, due to the UME protocols and the animal’s poor health, the
10-foot male Kogia breviceps was
humanely euthanized. The whale was
transported to FAU-HBOI’s pathology lab for immediate necropsy. For more information about the MMRC program
