Recent local Marine Mammal Stranding



On Sunday, February 1, 2015, FWC staff from the Tequesta field station notified HBOI MMRC stranding team of a live stranded whale in Stuart.  HBOI staff quickly responded and was joined by FWC Tequesta staff, FWC Law Enforcement officers, Martin County Sheriff, Martin County Fire Rescue, Martin County Lifeguards, HBOI volunteers and other volunteers.  Despite the care and efforts to save the animal, due to the UME protocols and the animal’s poor health, the 10-foot male Kogia breviceps was humanely euthanized.  The whale was transported to FAU-HBOI’s pathology lab for immediate necropsy.  For more information about the MMRC program visit:
